Frequently asked questions

The short version of what Meowti-lingual does—and what it does not try to be.

What is Meowti-lingual, and how is it different from other readers?

Meowti (short for Meowti-lingual) is an offline bilingual text player more than a reader. It turns texts into bilingual audio you can listen to with your eyes closed, without stopping to look up words. It also turns any book you have in two languages into an example-sentence dictionary, for any language pair. It works in any language your phone has a voice for.

It is a downtime listening tool first, not a course. If you want a beginner course, human voices or progress tracking, another app may suit you better. If you want to learn while you cook, draw or drive, give Meowti a try!

Do I need AI to use Meowti-lingual?

No. You can use starter materials, import your own text, save words, make playlists, and use dictionaries free without AI. AI features are optional.

What languages does it support?

It supports whatever languages your device supports. Starter-material and offline-dictionary coverage varies by language.

Do the translated lines have to match perfectly?

No. Meowti-lingual can also split and arrange text whose translated lines do not match perfectly.

Are machine translation and text-to-speech reliable?

Text-to-speech: yes. Phone voices have improved so much in the past few years that some are on par with, or better than, amateur human recordings. They do make the odd mistake, but compare that with reading silently or spending hours hunting for the perfect recording—your phone’s voices win on time, by far.

Machine translation (Google Translate, DeepL): not very reliable for your target language. But it is very reliable for translating into your own language, because there it is only a meaning guide that helps you follow along while you listen or read. It doesn’t have to be perfect.

AI translation: it depends. Free AI models are good with common languages but still unreliable with low-resource ones. Paid models such as Gemini are very reliable, even with difficult or low-resource languages like Cantonese, Hungarian, and Swahili, so you can trust them with your target language too. Meowti-lingual uses paid models, chosen for each language.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Your saved reading material and downloaded dictionaries can work offline. AI features and webpage imports require an internet connection. Your phone also needs the relevant text-to-speech voice installed.

Less looking things up. More time with the language.

Meowti-lingual is free to use. AI features are optional.
